Sony awards Ghostbusters Toy Rights to Hasbro

Exciting news!!!! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has given the rights to produce new Ghostbusters toys to Hasbro with the first wave hitting shelves next year.

Jamie Stevens, executive vice president with Sony Pictures Consumer Products, hd this to say about the deal:

As we build up to release our new Ghostbusters film next year, it was a natural choice to work with Hasbro to develop an all-new line of toys that not only celebrates the new film but also brings us back to the roots of the original film and toy line...

The "original toy line" Stevens is referring to is Kenner's The REAL Ghosbusters line which ran from 1986-1991. Hasbro acquired Kenner in 1991 which means they already have access to the classic line. Hopefully this will mean a re-release of the original toys!

The great thing to come out of this is that we will be getting a new toy line tie-in for the new movie (I'm looking forward to a new Ecto-1 with a spring-loaded shotgun seat). They also mention the original film so maybe we will see a legacy line of figures featuring the original four? I guess we will find out!
